Testing referenced to Australian Standards
Existing pedestrian surfaces are tested in accordance with AS 4663:2013, and results are interpreted against the guidance of HB 198:2014 and the classifications of AS 4586:2013. Wet pendulum results are expressed as P classifications from P0 to P5, and dry floor friction results as D0 or D1.

Wet pendulum and dry friction: two tests, one picture
The wet pendulum test is the primary method in AS 4663:2013 for assessing existing floors. It is portable, it tests the floor in place under wet conditions, and its swinging rubber slider mimics the action of a heel striking a wet surface, which is where most slips happen.
We also conduct the dry floor friction test, the standard's second on-site method, which measures the coefficient of friction of a dry surface. It is the right benchmark for corridors, office floors and other areas that stay reliably dry in service. What is acceptable always depends on the location: an external ramp needs far more grip than a dry office corridor.

What is slip resistance testing?
Slip resistance testing measures how much grip a floor surface provides to a pedestrian. In Australia, existing floors are tested using the methods in AS 4663:2013: the wet pendulum test and the dry floor friction test, both of which we conduct. Wet pendulum results are expressed as P classifications from P0 to P5, and dry friction results as D0 or D1.
What happens if my floor fails?
This is where Slip Audit is different. Instead of leaving you with a number and a problem, we explain the finding, prioritise it by risk, and refer you to practical rectification options such as changed cleaning regimes, anti-slip treatments or resurfacing. Once the surface is rectified, we can retest to document the improvement.
How often should floors be slip tested?
Slip resistance changes over time as floors wear, get polished, or have their cleaning regime changed. Many facilities test periodically as part of their risk management program, and testing is also common after an incident, a refurbishment, or a change of floor finish or cleaning contractor.
