Slip resistance for swimming pools, change rooms and wet areas

Nowhere on a site is grip tested harder than around a pool: bare feet, permanently wet surfaces, and users who range from toddlers to the elderly. Here is what good looks like for pool surrounds, ramps and change rooms, and the maintenance traps that quietly undo it.

Why wet areas are the hardest test of any floor

Most floors only need to perform when something goes wrong, a spill, a wet umbrella, a tracked-in shower of rain. Pool surrounds, communal showers and change rooms are different: water is their normal operating condition, and the people crossing them are barefoot, often moving quickly, and frequently among the most fall-vulnerable users a facility has. Add soap, sunscreen and body oils to the water film and you have the most demanding slip environment in any building. It is no coincidence that aquatic and leisure centres feature heavily in slip and fall claims.

What the guidance recommends

For new work, surface materials are selected against their laboratory classifications under AS 4586:2013, and for surfaces already in service, HB 198:2014 recommends minimum wet pendulum classifications by location. The commonly cited recommendations for aquatic areas are among the highest in the handbook:

  • Swimming pool surrounds and communal shower rooms. P4 is the commonly recommended classification, reflecting constant wetness and barefoot traffic.
  • Ramps and stairs leading into the water. P5, the highest classification there is. These surfaces combine a gradient, guaranteed water and bare feet.
  • Communal change rooms. P3 is the common recommendation, as these areas are wet-adjacent rather than saturated, though busy facilities often aim higher.

Product literature for pool tiles also quotes barefoot ramp classifications, A, B and C, from laboratory testing of new materials. How wet areas are tested

Installed wet areas are tested in place with the wet pendulum method under AS 4663:2013, configured appropriately for barefoot surfaces, with each location reported as a P classification. Testing is quick per location and non-destructive, and a typical aquatic facility assessment covers the surfaces where risk concentrates: concourse areas around the pool edge, ramps and step entries into the water, shower rooms, change rooms and the wet corridors that connect them. Testing can usually be scheduled around sessions or during maintenance shutdowns.

The maintenance traps that catch operators out

Aquatic floors are usually specified correctly at construction. The problems develop in service:

  • Calcium and scale build-up. Mineral deposits from pool water gradually glaze textured tiles, filling exactly the texture that provided the grip.
  • Body fat, sunscreen and soap films. These build into a residue that routine mopping does not remove. Concourses need periodic deep cleaning designed for the purpose.
  • Aggressive cleaning that backfires. High-pressure washing and harsh chemicals can erode the surface of some tiles over years, smoothing them out.
  • Patch repairs with the wrong tile. Replacement tiles that match the colour but not the slip classification create invisible hazard strips.
  • Painted concrete and rendered surfaces. Common around older pools and plant areas, and often well below guidance once the paint wears smooth.

Because these changes are gradual, they are invisible day to day. Periodic testing is how they get caught before an incident does the catching. Our guide on testing frequency suggests treating pool surrounds as a high-risk area on a shorter cycle than the rest of the site.

Who should be paying attention

This is not just an aquatic centre issue. Hotels and serviced apartments with pools, strata buildings with shared pools and spas, gyms with wet areas, schools with swimming programs, hydrotherapy pools in health and aged care settings, and councils operating leisure facilities all carry the same duty: manage the slip risk of wet barefoot areas so far as is reasonably practicable, and be able to show it.
